A.Cake Smash sessions are designed specifically for one child (or twins) and focus solely on capturing their birthday experience. Due to the nature of cake smash sessions and little ones’ short attention spans, family and sibling portraits are not included during these sessions.

If you’d like family portraits to celebrate this milestone as well, I offer a special family mini session option for cake smash clients that can be booked separately within your child’s birthday month so that the experience to document their birthday memories can be a memorable one that doesn't overwhelm them and allows you to get the best variety.

A.For the best experience and final images, Cake Smash sessions are kept intentionally small. I recommend that only parents attend the session with the birthday child (or twins).

Additional family members and siblings often become a distraction for little ones, making it difficult for them to stay engaged and interact with the camera. Keeping the space calm and focused allows me to capture the joyful, playful moments you’re booking me for.

If you’d like to include extended family or siblings in portraits to celebrate this milestone, I offer a separate family mini session option for cake smash clients that can be scheduled on a different date

A.I’ve been photographing Cake Smash and milestone sessions for over 12 years, working with babies and toddlers of all personalities. Whether your little one is energetic, cautious, shy, or simply needs extra time to warm up, sessions are always guided gently and at your child’s pace.

My approach is calm and patient, creating a relaxed environment where little personalities can shine. Every detail is thoughtfully prepared in advance — from sets and props to pacing — so you can arrive, settle in, and simply enjoy watching your baby have fun.

A.My home studio located in South Oshawa close to the lake about 5 minutes from the 401 hwy. I am around the corner from the South Oshawa Community Center.

A.Cake Smash sessions are designed to be fun, relaxed, and guided at your child’s pace. You’ll be greeted at the studio and we’ll begin with a short portrait portion to capture clean, timeless images before introducing the cake.

From there, we move into the cake smash itself, allowing your little one to explore, taste, and interact naturally while I capture their reactions and personality. Depending on your selected package, sessions may also include additional elements such as themed setups, outfit changes, or a splash/bath portion to finish.

Each session flows gently based on your child’s comfort and engagement, with plenty of flexibility built in to keep the experience positive and enjoyable.

A.That’s completely okay not all babies love cake, and every reaction tells a story. With years of experience, I’m comfortable guiding sessions whether your little one dives right in, gently explores, or decides the cake isn’t their favorite.

We always begin with clean portraits and playful moments before the cake, and many little ones light up during those portions. Depending on your package, sessions may also include additional elements such as outfit changes, themed setups, or a splash/bath finish all of which create joyful, expressive images regardless of how your baby feels about the cake.

No matter the reaction, the result is a meaningful, personality filled gallery that celebrates this milestone in a genuine and fun way.

A.Cake Smash sessions are naturally a bit messy that’s part of the fun. While some mess is expected, parents are responsible for helping keep their child within the cake smash area during the session.

Dressing comfortably and being prepared to assist your little one is recommended, as babies often move quickly and explore beyond the set if not guided. Bringing a change of clothes for yourself (and socks, just in case) is a good idea if you have plans afterward.

Keeping the mess contained allows the session to flow smoothly, protects studio sets and props, and helps me focus on capturing joyful, uninterrupted moments.

A.Offering cake to your little one before their session helps them feel more comfortable and confident when it’s time for the cake smash. Babies who have tried cake or sweets before often engage more easily and have more fun exploring during their session.

It’s also a great way to check for any sensitivities or allergies ahead of time, so there are no surprises during the shoot. All smash cakes used in the studio are vanilla with vanilla buttercream, so a small cupcake at home is perfect for practice.

Giving your baby their first taste at home rather than in the studio helps the session feel familiar and relaxed, allowing us to focus on capturing joyful, natural reactions.

A.In some cases, accommodations may be possible. However, for safety reasons, it is strongly recommended that parents provide a cake suited specifically to their baby’s dietary needs or allergies.

This ensures your little one’s safety and allows the session to remain relaxed and enjoyable, without concerns about ingredients or reactions. Allergy and dietary details can be discussed during the planning process to determine the best option for your session. If your session package comes with a cake included we would simply deduct the cost of the cake ($30) from the session fee for you to bring your own.

A.You’re welcome to take a few behind the scenes photos or short videos of your little one during the session, as long as it doesn’t distract them or interrupt the flow of the shoot.

To help keep your baby engaged and focused, I may ask parents to step back at certain moments while I guide the session. This allows me to capture the natural expressions and connection you’re booking me for.

If you do share any behind the scenes moments, I always love seeing them and tagging my Instagram or Facebook page is very appreciated.

A.Final image delivery is 3 business weeks from the date of your session.

Booking your session well in advance helps ensure your images are delivered within your desired time frame, especially if you’re planning around a birthday, party, or special date.

For those who need their images sooner, a rush editing option is available, offering a 1 week turnaround starting at $100 + HST.

Availability for rush delivery is limited and must be agreed to before booking.

A.Yes, sessions can be scheduled closer to your child’s birthday if availability allows. However, please note that images may not be completed and delivered in time for birthday celebrations or events.

To ensure your images are ready when you need them, booking your session well in advance is strongly recommended. Please refer to the image delivery timeline above for additional details.
